Ear Doctor

Nominee for Best Jazz of 2006

Tom Paynter (keyboards, flute), Dan Honnold (saxes), Jerry Shelato (Tuba), Jeff Magby (Drums), and Ben Taylor (Bass) met at thier University and in 1996 formed Ear Doctor. Their Unique style of modern jazz has a wide array influences, including Oregon, Hal Russell, Roland Kirk, Conlon Nancarrow, Thelonius Monk, and Pat Benatar. Though they have never made any recordings under an official label, they've recorded almost all of their shows and even made their own hand made CD based on sheer demand, and their recordings can be made available to anyone through email. As said by Michael J. La Due, "Ear Doctor builds complex though catchy music over a bottom of both contrabass and virtuoso tuba. Electric keyboards supply piano, clavier, even theremin sounds, interwoven with inventive, muscular improvisation on tenor and soprano saxophone. The keyboardist doubles on flute, often played with one hand while the other sustains keyboard presence, both played in harmony. The drummer invents, solos, and leads rhythmically without intruding on the other players. Expect times when you can swear the musicians levitate in their own musical, gravitational sphere, challenging and privileging us to hear and see this done." Ear Doctor frequently plays at Zorba's, as well as The Iron Post, Cowboy Monkey, and various local art installations.
