Led by percussionist Jason Finkelman, Champaign-Urbana's improvising ensemble Nu Orbit has a unique sound reflecting the jazz, ethnic, and ambient music backgrounds of its core members Tom Paynter (keyboards, flute), Chad Dunn (percussion), and Jay Eychaner (synthesizer). With a commitment towards collaboration across the genre of improvised music, Nu Orbit has performed with noted special guests Roy Campbell, Jr., David Tronzo, Burton Greene, and Mark Deutsch, as well as many of C-U's most adventurous musicians. Nu Orbit was formed in March 2002 following the enthusiastic response to the Cross-Cultural Directions in Jazz program, which was part of Krannert Center's Jazz Immersion Series.
