Holly Rushakoff

Nominee for Best Female of 2006

I've been playing the bass for four years-it's my first instrument and Triple Whip is my first band. My desire to play and my attraction to the bass is so strong but the funny thing is that the bass and I were kind of set up like a blind date. Before Triple Whip, guitarist/singer Santanu wanted to form an Asian Underground band (think Talvin Singh, DJ Cheb I Sabbah) and he kept throwing different instruments my way. Bass was third. When I got ahold of it (a very heavy Fender jazz bass), I just couldn't stop smiling, I loved the sound, and I knew it was going to be mine. I quit Santanu's Kung-Fu classes to learn and practice the bass. A few months later, Triple Whip formed.

My previous identity was "local music scene supporter." People knew me from my days as the WEFT Sessions host/booking agent or the music editor for The Octopus. And then one day I was in a band with two accomplished musicians, and bass was strategically one of the centerpieces of our sound. It kind of came out of nowhere.

Now that Santanu has moved to Austin, Jane Boxall and I have created the next phase of Triple Whip as a bass and drum duo. A demo/EP is in the works.
